The Maumee Police Division has selected Detective Cody Corado as its 2025 Officer of the Year, an honor awarded by the department’s Awards Review Board. The recognition highlights Detective Corado’s exceptional work ethic, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to serving the Maumee community.
At age 32, Detective Corado has built an impressive career. He joined the department on November 13, 2017, beginning with six years on patrol, primarily on the midnight shift, while taking on additional responsibilities, such as serving as a firearms instructor. In 2023, he transitioned to the detective bureau, where his caseload has ranged from petty theft to sexual assault cases and internet crimes against children.
His role also includes evidence collection and navigating the increasingly complex world of digital content. Corado has completed training in photography, interview and interrogation, and evidence management. He values formal instruction but believes that real-world experience is what truly solidifies those skills.
“For me at least, I don’t learn until I go and do it,” he said. “I think that the opportunities here in Maumee are incredible.”
Due to staffing shortages in the detective bureau, Corado has also frequently stepped in to cover additional on-call shifts. Some nights brought no calls at all; others required multiple responses. Regardless of the unpredictability, he remained ready and available whenever needed.
Police Chief Josh Sprow credits his willingness to shoulder that responsibility during a challenging period.
“No one understands or appreciates the difficulties of being on‑call until they have done it,” Chief Sprow said. “You can’t do anything; you have to stay local and be ready if a call comes in.”
Corado was genuinely surprised to learn he had been selected as Officer of the Year.
“I feel like I go to work and I do the best I can, and I try to make the best decision with the information that I have, and I feel like everybody here does that,” he said. “We work with really good people here. I look at the people who have gotten the award before me, and it’s just incredible to me that somebody thought that I was on that same level.”
A native of Oregon, Ohio, Corado earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Toledo in 2016 and completed his Ohio Basic Peace Officer training at Owens Community College. He is grateful for the opportunities he has been given so early in his career.
“For someone as young as I am in my career to be in the positions that I am right now is kind of unheard of,” he said. “As a police department, we’ve decided that it’s important to give people the opportunity to do what they want to do.”
Detective Corado’s dedication, initiative, and steady leadership exemplify the values of the Maumee Police Division. His contributions, both seen and unseen, continue to strengthen the department and the community it serves.
The Maumee Police Division Award Banquet takes place in March.
