The Maumee City Council has unanimously passed Ordinance 020-2025, approving a consent decree with the Ohio EPA and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. The action came at the August 11 special meeting.

The Ordinance allows public funding for critical improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system, including sewer lateral repairs or replacement on private property, sump pump corrections or installations, and the elimination of clean water connections to the system on certain private properties.

The decree, which was reached after extensive negotiations, requires the city to follow the Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Study (SSES) and provides timelines for the elimination of sanitary sewer discharges.

The agreement also protects city staff currently working on the program from liability under the terms of the decree.

Once the consent decree is approved by both state agencies, a 30-day public comment period will follow. After that, the decree must be signed by a judge before it becomes final. The City will continue to work to correct the issues with its sanitary sewer issues.
