Building a Safer Community
The AW Trail Reconstruction Project
is the first project in Ohio to prioritize street design around pedestrian and motorist safety, not just vehicle speed. By reconfiguring streets to naturally slow traffic, we’ve created a safer environment for everyone, whether walking, biking, driving, or using mobility aids.
The project includes a 3.5-mile multi-use protected path, which was built to the highest standards, including a 4-inch concrete surface and full compliance with both AASHTO and ADA guidelines. These improvements significantly enhance durability, accessibility, and safety for everyone using the trail. Additionally, the city secured $1.78 million in state and federal funding to support the project.
The Ohio Department of Transportation has recognized the AW Trail project as a model for future infrastructure design and awarded Maumee additional grant funding to continue promoting safe, people-centered transportation solutions.
