SUMMARY:Mosquito Bucket Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The City of Maumee Environmental and Tree Advisory Commission invites residents to a hands on Mosquito Bucket Challenge & Citizen Science App Workshop on Monday\, June 23 at 6:00 PM at the Maumee Branch Library. The event is designed to help residents learn simple\, low cost ways to reduce mosquito populations without spraying\, while also contributing to global scientific research. \nThe workshop will be led by Jodi Haney\, who will demonstrate how “mosquito buckets” work—an effective\, environmentally friendly method for reducing mosquito breeding sites. The first 30 attendees will receive materials to take home and set up their own mosquito bucket. \nParticipants will also learn to use the GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper\, a citizen science smartphone app that guides users through identifying standing water\, checking for mosquito larvae\, documenting conditions with photos\, and uploading observations to a global database. These contributions help scientists track mosquito populations and support public health efforts. \nInformation from the Toledo Area Sanitary District will also be available for residents who want to learn more about local mosquito control and prevention.

SUMMARY:Make a Spotted Lanternfly Trap
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, our community experienced its first major wave of invasive spotted lanternflies and experts predict their numbers to grow even more this year. Taking action now can help to slow their spread and reduce populations. One of the most effective steps a resident can take is to build a simple\, safe Spotted Lanternfly Trap. \nJoin community experts Mark Irmen and Phil Kirk for a special workshop where you will learn how to build a trap\, plus hear more about these invasive pests\, and the steps the city is taking to deal with the problem. \nThe Maumee Environmental & Tree Advisory Commission has teamed up with the Rotary Club of Maumee to present this important information\, and we invite everyone to come and learn how to become part of the solution.
