Fire Prevention - Fireworks Safety
In an effort to keep the public safe, the Maumee Fire and Police Divisions remind you NOT to use illegal fireworks.  Each year, fireworks cause deaths and injuries, as well as property damage.  Please read this sheet and the attached “Fireworks Fact Sheet” from the State of Ohio:

What Fireworks can the public use?
  • “Trick and Novelty” fireworks.  See examples on the “Fireworks Fact Sheet”.

What Fireworks CAN’T be used by the public?

Æ      “Consumer Fireworks”.  These fireworks can only be sold by a licenced manufacturer or wholesaler.

**NOTE:  Anyone over the age of 18 may purchase these, but they must sign a form stating they will transport the fireworks outside of the State of Ohio within 48 hours of the time of purchase (or 72 hours for non-Ohio residents).

See examples on the “Fireworks Fact Sheet” under “Non-exempted fireworks”.

Æ      “Display Fireworks”.  These can only be sold by a licenced manufacturer, wholesaler, or out-of-state shipper.  They can only be purchased by a licenced manufacturer, wholesaler, or exhibitor.  And they can only be used by a licenced exhibitor!  These are the large fireworks you see and enjoy at public displays.

SET A SAFE EXAMPLE FOR CHILDREN!

If you use Trick or Novelty items, children may imitate you, not realizing how dangerous these items are.  The highest injury rates from fireworks are for children ages 5 to 9.  The risk of fire death relative to exposure shows fireworks as the riskiest consumer product!  REMEMBER:

Ü     Children should not be allowed to ignite or set off fireworks, and they should never have them without adult supervision.

Ü     Do Not stand near the fireworks after they are ignited.

Ü     Never ignite fireworks inside any building or vehicle.

Ü     Never re-light a “dud”.

Ü     Soak used items in a bucket of water then dispose of them.

Ü     Keep matches and lighters out of a child’s reach!

Ü     If someone gets burned, run cool water over the burn for 3-5 minutes; seek medical attention if necessary.
